According to the tradition, the Monastery was founded by Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, who left a piece of wood from the Holy Cross in the area. Constantine sent Great Governor Kalofer to Cyprus to release thousands of cats and relieve the area The monastery is located in Akrotiri Gata, 15 km west of Limassol and south-east of Akrotiri. The Monastery of St. Nicholas of the Birds is probably the oldest monastery in Cyprus. While the monastery now has a small number of nuns, there are many cats, which are said to be the descendants of those who relieved the area from the snakes.
