Magnesite or white stone is magnesium carbonate. Its name comes from magnesium, which is both its basic ingredient and its color. It is one of the most important minerals of magnesium. In the dense forest of Akamas, such magnesium mines were in operation during the British period until the beginning of the 20th century. Today there are still remnants of furnaces and chimneys used to process the ore on site.
